The members of Lady VOLTAGE, a community-based, all-girls, FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) team made quite an impression at the recent FutureLAND Conference by winning the 2025 “Hack-a-Thon Challenge!”
The team, composed of female students from 12 different high schools within the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, was at the conference to demonstrate Athena, their student-designed and constructed competition robot from the 2024 FRC season. While there, the team attended panel discussions on the latest technological developments, participated in various networking opportunities, and sat in on interviews with some of Cleveland’s tech pioneers.
Later, with the guidance of Coach Jordan Seigler, the team's lead mentor, the ladies of Lady VOLTAGE competed in a “Hack-a-thon Challenge” that tested their problem-solving abilities. Working together as a team, the girls were able to use innovative thinking, and many of the skills that they had developed designing, building, and programming robots as part of the GLSC Robotics Initiative, to win the competition! Each participating member of the team received a new laptop computer and a $100 gift card as part of the prize package.
Speaking on behalf of the Great Lakes Science Center’s Robotics Initiative, Program Lead JonDarr Bradshaw said “the science center is extremely proud of these young ladies and all that they have accomplished this season.”
The FutureLAND Conference, which was held in Cleveland’s historic “Playhouse Square" District, is an annual multi-day conference celebrating the diversity in tech, arts, and culture in Northeast Ohio.
