Cleveland Teams Finish Strong at Off-season Tournament
Posted on October 21, 2025, by J Bradshaw.
Congratulations to the four Cleveland-based robotics teams for their strong performances at the recent Voltage Valley Vibe, an off-season high school robotics tournament for FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) teams from Northeastern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. The four Cleveland teams are all based at high schools within the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) and sponsored by the Great Lakes Science Center as part of the science center’s Robotics Initiative. The following CMSD-based teams were among the list of competors for this single-day event.
-
Team #8140 (the RoboManiacs from MC2 STEM High School);
-
Team #8222 (the Argonauts from Davis Aerospace and Maritime High School);
-
Team #8243 (the AstroCircuits from John Marshall School of Information Technology); and
-
Team #9622 (GRIDLOCK from the Garrett Morgan School of Engineering and Innovation).
The event was held at Warren G. Harding High School in Warren, Ohio, and was hosted jointly by Team #48 (Team E.L.I.T.E. of Warren Harding High School) and Team #2399 (The Fighting Unicorns of Hathaway Brown School for Girls)..
The four Cleveland-based teams did very well against a highly competitive field of top-performing teams from across the two-state region. Team #9622 finished the qualification matches ranked 9th and advanced into the Playoffs as the Captain of Alliance #5. They selected Team #8243 as one of their three alliance partners. Team #8243 had finished the qualification rounds ranked 17th. Alliance #5 performed well in the early playoff rounds but was eliminated in the Fourth Round of the playoffs, with all of the members of this Alliance finishing the tournament in 4th place.
Team #8222 finished qualification matches ranked 10th and advanced into the Playoffs as the Captain of Alliance #6. The Alliance performed exceptionally well in the early rounds of the playoffs, defeating Alliance #5 in Round Four to advance to the Semifinals, where they were defeated by Alliance #2 and finished the tournament in third place.
Team #8140 was the highest-ranked unselected team when the playoff rounds began. When the robot operated by the Captain of Alliance #2 became inoperable, Team #8140 was brought in Round Two as a “Backup Bot.” The robot drivers and operators for the team demonstrated both skill and poise under extreme pressure. They played brilliant defense and scored critical points when needed to help the Number Two Alliance defeat their opponents and remain alive in the upper bracket of this double elimination tournament until the repairs to the Alliance Capitan’s robot could be completed. The Alliance continued on into the playoffs, defeating Alliance #6 in the semi-finals to advance to the Finals, where they were ultimately defeated in straight sets by Alliance #1. Team #8140, along with their Alliance partners, finished the event as Tournament Finalists, earning their best finish ever!
The four teams plan to take some time off before recruiting and training new CMSD students for the upcoming 2026 FRC season.
