The members of FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) Team #9643 (Lady VOLTAGE) were recently interviewed for News 5, Cleveland’s ABC affiliate. The Cleveland-based FRC team is making history, becoming only the third all-girls high school robotics team in the state and the first to service public schools in Northeast Ohio. Chelsey Kohn, who oversees the robotics program for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) says that despite the growing need for qualified workers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), women represent less than one-third of the STEM careers in the region, and across the country. Programs like this, are how we change that.

The community-based team includes students from 10 different CMSD high schools and is one of six FRC teams that meet regularly at the Great Lakes Science Center as part of the science center's Robotics Initiative.  Major support for the all-girls team is provided by Sherwin-Williams, whose employees volunteer as adult mentors for the team.  Lady VOLTAGE and their student-built robot will be competing locally at the 25th annual Buckeye Regional tournament from March 21st through 23rd at the Wolstein Center, in downtown Cleveland.

The team is still recruiting students, with membership open to any high school-aged girl enrolled in the District.  If interested in joining or supporting the team, please contact Ms. Jordan Siegler, the lead mentor for the team at Jordan.Seigler@clevelandmetroschools.org
